Effingham County CourthouseEffingham County Courthouse
The courthouse was built in 1871, on the site of the 1850’s courthouse, which tragically burned to the ground in March 1869, reducing all the county’s records to ash.

This structure, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features an Itanianate facade and clock cupola. The building was the working courthouse for Effingham County up until 2007.

There are several theories on how Effingham was named. One suggests it was to honor Lord Effingham, a British noble, who resigned his commission rather than take up arms against the colonies in the Revolutionary War. A monument to Lord Effingham stands on the NE corner of the courthouse square. The SW corner of the square is dedicated to honoring war veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

The courthouse is the site of special events, including the Artisan Fair and Old Fashion Christmas. 800-772-0750

Heart TheatreHeart Theatre
A work of art! The glow of the original neon and the Heart Theatre sign make this 1930’s landmark a must-see at night.

The cream and maroon terracotta tiles are a perfect foil for the neon and marquee lights. The original blue neon clock still glows from the wall next to the screen.

The theatre is located 133 E. Jefferson Avenue. Across from the Courthouse.
