The annual Sculpture on the Avenues exhibition brings an array of artwork to Downtown Effingham for its ninth exhibit, which features work by some of the Midwest’s best known and unknown sculptors.
The permanent outdoor exhibit has grown from one to over 20 works of art, which are joined each year by selected pieces.
In 1997, Effingham Community Committee for the Arts formed and raised over $60,000 to commission Leonardo Nierman’s Flame of Hope, which today stands at the west entrance of City Hall. Just two years after, the ECCA conceived Sculpture on the Avenues.
The ECCA chooses works which capture the imagination and appeal to a variety of tastes. There’s fun, whimsy and stark lines and edges - reality and abstract, as well. The pieces are placed to be accessible, to be touched and viewed from every angle.
Residents and visitors wholeheartedly embrace the event. Several sculptures have found permanent homes in Effingham and the surrounding area.
An informative brochure, which facilitates a walking tour, is available at Effingham hotels, downtown businesses, the Tourism Office at City Hall and in a convenient display outside City Hall at 201 E. Jefferson Avenue
