National Road

It was a super highway of dirt, rock and timber. In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation creating a National Road funded solely by the federal government at the time. This historic route covers Cumcerland, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.'It was referred'to as'the Cumberland Trail along with'other nicknames such as National Pike, National Trail and the National Road. The Illinois National Road Association promotes the road and activities on the roadway.
